What Is Normal?

One of the universal truths in life is that everything will change. It is the principle of impermanence.

This reminds me of a riddle I once heard from my meditation teacher…

"What are the four words that can make a happy person sad and a sad person happy... THIS TOO SHALL PASS."

This helps me remember impermanence. It allows me to let go of how I think things should be and accept them as they are. I can then move forward to take skillful action. Its not about being passive. On the contrary, its about transformation.

Sometimes we can't transform the way the world is. However, we can always transform ourselves and our relationship with the world.

Coincidentally this is sometimes exactly what is needed to actually make the change that we desire.

There are times when I don't want to accept things as they are. I feel disconnected and isolated in many ways.

These are painful times for many of us and my heart goes out to you all. By sending out my loving-kindness to you, I immediately feel more connected, even though I didn't change the world directly.

Then I remember to add loving-kindness into class and inspire others to send out their love too.

This is how I can make a change. We all have special gifts, talents and skills.

The key is to find out how we can spread out more love than harm.

Even if the skill seems small or insignificant, it can plant seeds and send out ripples.

So, please send as much loving-kindness out to the world as you can in any way that feels right to you. This is one way we can move forward in these times.

"Normal is not something to aspire to, it's something to get away from." - Jodie Foster

This quote encourages us to think beyond the confines of what is considered "normal" and strive for something more meaningful and fulfilling in our lives. It reminds us that we shouldn't be afraid to break free from societal expectations and instead pursue our own unique paths. By embracing our individuality and taking risks, we can discover new possibilities and find greater happiness and success.
